Discussion of research and developments in connection with increases in size of certain bulk carriers to about 90,000 tons and tankers to 300,000 tons, and studies of tankers in 500,000 to million ton class; main points reflecting aspects which primarily characterize hull structural developments are noted, and more detailed consideration is given to waves and wave induced loads, structural response, and special strength problems.
