Comparison of four propeller types with respect to their ability in stopping 100,000 ton dw tanker; it is concluded -- controllable-pitch propeller is superior for both diesel and steam turbine machinery; for tanker with steam turbine machinery head reaches corresponding to conventional, ducted and contrarotating propeller are nearly equal; with diesel machinery, ducted propeller and contrarotating propellers lead to decrease in head reach compared with conventional propeller; effect on head reach of revolutions per minute at which diesel engine can be reversed from `turning slack' to `full power astern' is considerable.
