Stopping abilities of 100,000 tons dw tanker equipped with different propeller types were derived from model test results with aid of quasi-stationary method; four propeller types examined were conventional screw propeller, screw and nozzle system (ducted propeller), contra-rotating propeller system, and controllable pitch propeller; last was found superior for both diesel and steam machinery; factors in use of first three propeller types are discussed with reference to machinery.
