Four engined turboprop flying boat, PX-S, gross weight 87,000 lb, with high open ocean capability is under construction at Shin-Meiwa Industry Co, Japan; deflected slip stream and boundary-layer control (BLC) are adopted as high lift devices; automatic stabilization is included in fully powered flight control system; spray suppressor is applied on hull forebody; dynamically similar flying model, UF-XS, 75% in linear dimension, was constructed and flight tested; results show that lift coefficient measured at takeoff, 40 knots, is 6.9; takeoff run with 18 knots of wind is about 400 ft in 10 sec; low landing speed, 45 knots, together with air cushion effect of BLC near surface makes landing shock very small.
