Experiments reported hydraulically measure coefficient of friction between brake block and tire and assess force of adhesion by tungsten weights immersed in mercury; tangential force produced by brake block has to be equated to quantity which is subject to extreme variations from different variables; for maximum braking, brake block should be subject to same influences and to similar degree; variables to which brake block is subject are listed.
