Difference between primary and secondary radar is described showing that latter requires active cooperation from aircraft; summary of advantages of secondary surveillance radar (SSR); operational features, such as SSR signals, transponder codes, sidelobe suppression, mode interface, defruiting and decoding; passive and active readout; reference is made to automatic SSR system under construction for Eurocontrol which is expected to cover most of Europe by about 1968.
