Development of variable speed permanent magnet (PM) motor, designed by Prestolite Co for initial use in windshield wiper assemblies on passenger cars; motor provides reduced weight, reduced size, improved efficiency, and excellent qualities in stall torque balance for low-speed and high-speed operation; performance of variable speed wire-wound design and two-speed PM motor with new variable speed PM unit are compared; evolution of needed circuitry is discussed showing importance of using diode in circuit.
