Naval ships over 300 ft long are built on assembly line using preassembled sections delivered by revolving gantry cranes operating on tracks transverse to direction the ship travels; as construction advances, vessels are moved sideways on 4-wheel buggies with hydraulic jacks to lower ships on permanent blocking at seven different berths; at end of 625-ft assembly line, vessel is lowered on timber sleds and launched sideways.
