Single-engine Brush Co-Co diesel-electric design with a-c main generator conforming to British Railways loading-gage; locomotive is built for express passenger and heavy freight services and is powered by Sulzer 16 cyl LVA 24 developing 4000 bhp at 1050 rpm; machine is connected to engine crankshaft at alternator end and to keep size down step-up gearbox is interposed between it and alternator; locomotive is dual fitted to handle both automatic air and vacuum braked trains.
