To eliminate expense of joint maintenance and to realize other savings, Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway installed 5 1/2 mi of 131-lb continuous welded rail, joined by oxyacetylene pressure butt welds; longest rail in installation is 3503 ft long and shortest 410 ft long; welding set up, method of distributing rail, its installation and costs, are discussed.
