Tests were conducted on 1 to 25 scale model of filling and emptying systems of existing 600×110-ft lock of McAlpine project on Ohio River; tests were concerned with whether structurally feasible modifications of systems would result in decreased turbulence and hawser stresses and thus permit faster filling and emptying of lock; tests showed that major improvement in performance of filling and emptying system would result from connecting the filling and emptying culverts and plugging certain ports in existing filling system.
