Comprehensive theory describes behavior of existing vehicles and shows how railroad vehicles can be designed for stable running at high speeds; theory was developed as result of work that was carried out at British Railways Research Dept, Derby; for small displacements of vehicle from center of track, guidance is achieved by means of forces acting at wheel treads acting in conjunction with conicity of wheels; design studies show that by using concept of flexible, damped suspension with profiled wheels critical speeds exceeding 100 mph can be achieved for four-wheel vehicles.
