It is suggested that by far greatest part of diesel ships of merchant marine built in recent years or now under construction are driven by slow speed direct-coupled engines; in respect of total horsepower, share of multi-engine installations is extremely modest; present paper deals with reasons behind this situation and analyzes respective advantages and drawbacks of geared arrangements and of direct-drive slow speed engines; examples and studies shown are based on engine types of Sulzer company.
