To compare service performance of 78-ft rails with 39-ft rails, Pennsylvania installed in eastbound main track near Hamlet, Ind, track mile of longer rails and adjoining them, 1 1/2 track miles of shorter ones; 78-ft rails laid as quickly as 39-ft rails; Model 40 Burro crane equipped with 55-ft boom was used.
