In construction of new tube between Highgate and East Finchley, engineers have evolved rapid means of placing rails in 12-ft diam tunnel; rails are welded together into lengths of 300 ft in mobile electric welding unit; six welded rails comprise work for one shift, and during day they are loaded on train; at night battery driven locomotive pushes train with its load and gang of men to limit of rails laid in tunnel during previous shift.
