Jacking of pipe 30-in. to 108-in. in diam under railroads and congested streets and highways is eliminating interference with traffic and costly maintenance which results from trench settlement; concrete pipe is suitable to this type of work; pipe lines, while being jacked, and after they are installed, are not subject to unbalanced stresses; when line is pushed through soil, it becomes integral part of soil mass as it occupies practically same space as excavated material; points to be observed before and while jacking pipe.
