Investigation was designed to determine how accurately drivers can estimate clearance time; subjects viewed approaching vehicle and were instructed to designate last possible moment when they felt they could safely pass lead car; they did not actually pass lead vehicle; however on basis of timings taken by experimenter, it was possible to determine whether driver could actually have passed lead car safely or whether he would not have had adequate time to complete pass.
