Research reported was concerned with how well drivers can judge distance they require to overtake and pass another vehicle on roadway; experiment in which 20 drivers made estimates of overtaking and passing distances in their own car and in government car, at speeds of 18, 30, and 50 mph, was carried out on airplane runway; it was found that drivers are unable to estimate overtaking distances accurately, but rather tend to make dangerous underestimates, particularly when car in front is moving rapidly; applications of research results are suggested for design of highways and traffic control devices.
