Breaking-up and making-up processes of freight trains of Goryokaku and Higashimuroran yards in Hokkaido, Japan, were investigated and simulation model was constructed for each yard; simulations were carried out by using systems simulator, type GPSS II for IBM 7090; freight cars are represented as transactions, and sorting/formation and arrival/departure tracks are represented as storages; movements of car transactions in simulation correspond to those of freight cars in yards.
