Testing to determine amount of damage to highway pavements by vehicles equipped with studded tires was limited to dry pavement surfaces subject to abrasive action of studs; portland cement concrete pavement and plant-mixed bituminous pavement were used in tests set up on section of interstate highway not yet opened to traffic; tires equipped with tungsten carbide studs were tested in series of starts and stops on both types of pavement; stops and starts were made to simulate traffic conditions which could be expected at typical urban intersection.
