Results of investigation conducted by New York State Dept of Public Works Research Bureau to determine ability of tungsten carbide studs to increase tractive effort of snow tire on ice and packed snow, to determine effect of studs on traction when there was no snow or ice on pavement, and to investigate extent of pavement damage caused by studded tire sliding along bare pavement; tests were performed with special skid trailer and with two 7.75×14 snow tires of same tread and design and composition, one containing 67 tungsten carbide studs and other none; method of measurement of effective coefficient of friction between tire and pavement.
