Only navigation satellite seems to promise truly universal system for precision long-range navigation; newest "NAVSAT" technique for measuring position of vehicle in geodetic coordinates is phase-differencing, developed by RCA; 10-kc tone modulated on continuous wave 2 Gc carrier is transmitted from control center via satellites to ship or aircraft at point on earth; signals are transponded back to control center via satellites for out-of-phase computation; operational method is described; analysis diagram of RCA phase-differencing NAVSAT for air traffic control mode shows values for critical link parameters; 2-Gc carrier and phase-difference mensuration permits use of small satellite antenna and low-power satellite and aircraft transmitters with 10-lb signal-over-noise advantage at end of loop.
