This work presents how a port operations model of an iron ore terminal was used as a decision-making tool during the feasibility engineering phase of the project. The port location is exposed to wave action which will affect port operations, predominantly during the winter months. Mining operations, specifically the extraction and export of the iron ore, are continuous throughout the year. As such, the seasonal availability of the port due to environmental conditions significantly impacts the business model of the project. In order to study in detail the operational performance capabilities of the port, a model simulating the operations of the port layout was undertaken. The study estimated that the exposed port layout resulted in a capital expenditure reduction of 40% in terms of the total project when compared to the protected port layout while still being able to achieve the throughput. In addition, a seasonal vessel arrival pattern was suggested for the autumn and winter seasons assuming that the port owner could effectively manage the vessel fleet in China with the seasonal commercialization of the iron ore in that country.
