The invention relates to a method for controlling a drive unit (4, 5) of a motor vehicle (2), wherein a sensor system (8, 9) senses a parking space (1) of the motor vehicle (2) at least in part and generates corresponding sensor data (13), which is provided to a control device (12), by means of which a data set (14) spatially characterising the parking space (1) at least in part is created such that the drive unit (4, 5) is controlled on the basis of the data set (14) by means of the control device (12). According to the invention, a volume dimension of the parking space (1) is determined by means of the control device (12) and added to the data set (14) for controlling the drive unit (4, 5). The invention further relates to a parking assistance system (3) which is designed to carry out the method, and to a motor vehicle (2) equipped with a parking assistance system (3) of this kind.
