The present invention relates to a method for initiating and executing automatic braking, comprising the steps of detecting an obstacle (100), checking that the initiation conditions are satisfied (320, 410, 420, 430, 440, 470), transmitting a command to apply a determined braking force (Fe, Fr) (340, 480), said method comprising a step of selecting the type of automatic breaking to be considered (200) which involves, when the instantaneous speed (Vc) of said vehicle is below or equal to a threshold value (BV), opting for automatic avoidance breaking during which a variable breaking force (Fe) is applied, or, when the instantaneous speed (Vc) of said vehicle is above said threshold value (BV), opting for automatic impact-speed reduction breaking during which a predefined breaking force (Fr) less than or equal to said variable breaking force (Fe) is applied.
