The present disclosure relates to a method for generating a reference trajectory for a vehicle within a lane. The method comprises receiving at least one vehicle current state parameter describing a current state of the vehicle (S11). The current state of the vehicle includes at least a current location of the vehicle. Furthermore, a destination parameter (S12) describing a destination to be reached by the vehicle and at least one route parameter (S13) describing a route for reaching the destination are received. Further, the method includes estimating a power loss (S14) caused when traveling from a current location of the vehicle to the destination. A reference trajectory within the lane is determined such that it minimizes power loss and leads to the destination (S15). In addition, a method for operating a vehicle is proposed. According to the method, a reference trajectory is generated according to the above method (S21) and at least one control signal is provided for controlling a movement of the vehicle along the reference trajectory (S22). In addition, a data processing device, a vehicle and a computer readable medium are proposed.
