The invention relates to audio-based road condition sensing and detection techniques for autonomous driving vehicles. A sound signal is received by one or more microphones disposed at the ADV. The sound signal is analyzed to extract features of the road on which the ADV is driving. And determining the road condition of the road based on the extracted features. Path planning and velocity planning are performed to generate a trajectory based on the road condition. And controlling the ADV to autonomously drive according to the generated trajectory.
