The invention relates to the technical field of underwater equipment, and provides an underwater robot and a control method thereof. The underwater robot includes: a main body; a propelling device which is connected with the main body and used for driving the main body to advance underwater; an image acquisition device which is arranged at the front end of the main body and used for acquiring underwater image information of a user; and a visual recognition device which is used for recognizing gesture instructions of the user according to the underwater image information of the user and controlling the propelling device to drive the main body to execute corresponding actions according to the gesture instructions. The underwater robot has a normal propelling function and also has a gesture control function, so that the underwater robot has multiple functions and meets more market requirements.
