This chapter provides an example that illustrates the application of the integrated schedule design problem based on the itinerary‐based fleet assignment model (ISD‐IFAM). The example considers the case in which the schedule can be adjusted by possibly eliminating some of its optional flights. To explain the different components of the ISD‐IFAM, the chapter considers the Excel sheets. It shows the balance constraints of the ISD‐IFAM problem. Solving the ISD‐IFAM problem, the optimal values of the spilled demand are determined in conjunction with the optimal fleet assignment. The problem minimizes an objective function in the form of the sum of the operating cost, the spill cost minus the recapture revenue, and the change in unconstrained revenue due to schedule change. The amount of change in the unconstrained demand of each itinerary depends on its attractiveness compared with other competing itineraries.
