The Cross‐track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) is a hyperspectral, interferometric space instrument that was launched into low Earth orbit on 28 October 2011 onboard the Suomi National Polar‐orbiting Partnership satellite. CrIS collects upwelling atmospheric radiance at over 2000 infrared wavelengths, and uses this information to construct vertical profiles of temperature, moisture, and pressure on a global basis. CrIS data is a critical input to worldwide 3‐to‐5‐day weather forecasts, and is substantially improving the accuracy of these forecasts. This chapter describes the design of the CrIS instrument, provides an overview of the onboard calibration system and overall calibration approach, describes how the instrument is operated on‐orbit, summarizes measured performance from ground tests and on‐orbit validation tests, describes the ground algorithms that are used for calibration, discusses lessons learned, and summarizes potential improvements for future CrIS instruments.
