This chapter considers the tradeoff between weighted RMS body acceleration, RMS suspension displacement and RMS tyre force variation, and the effects of altering suspension parameters. The main difference between a wheeled and a tracked vehicle suspension is the greater flexibility of the pneumatic tyre. The chapter shows the effects on weighted RMS heave acceleration of vehicles with one, two, three and four axles when running on a rough cross‐country course. The vehicles are considered to have a 5.2 m wheelbase and equi‐spaced axles. The vehicle can reasonably be considered as two quarter‐car models: one for the front suspension that mainly supports the cab engine and gearbox; and one for the rear suspension that mainly supports the payload. Far fewer wheeled vehicle ride measurements were recorded at DERA compared with those for tracked vehicles, but some measurements were acquired of the DROPS vehicle.
