The main objective of the airline planning process is to develop the future flight schedule as well as the schedule of all resources used to operate all scheduled flights. It is difficult at the schedule planning stage to identify the appropriate trade‐off between enhancing the level of schedule robustness and the associated possible increase in cost. The proactive approach allows the airlines to develop schedules that are robust against disruptions. Two common methods are used to develop the proactive approach. The first method is to add slack times in the schedule to make the schedule less prone to disruptions. Longer flight block time is equivalent to incorporating a slack time in the schedule for the flight. The second method is to align flights and resources in a way that makes the schedule easy to recover in case irregular operations occur. Flight cancellations are unavoidable during severe irregular operations.
