This paper presents a case study of the Transportation Academy at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The academy has been established to assist in meeting the lifelong learning needs of transportation professionals in Massachusetts and the greater New England region. The paper briefly presents the academy's overall mission, accomplishments to date, and current work plan and reviews the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with the implementation of such an academy in a university setting. The paper is intended to provide guidance to other colleges and universities interested in implementing similar comprehensive professional capacity–building efforts.
