Steel plates for shipbuilding in Japan have shown remarkable advances along with the progress of the structural design of ships and the improvement of ship fabrication technology of Japanese shipbuilders. A typical example of these advances id the development of TMCP technology (Thermo-Mechanical Control Process) and the extensive application of TMCP high-strength steel plates in shipbuilding. This new generation steel plates for shipbuilding are lighter, stronger and safer than previous plates, and help lower the cost of shipbuilding and lessen the impact of ship operation on the environment. Some examples standing for new types of steel plates for shipbuilding are presented. These are: 1) the application of YP40 steel for construction of large ship s of 200 m or more in overall length, 2) steels for new type LPG carriers, 3) introduction of high arrestability-endowed steel plates.
