Particle-reinforced aluminium matrix composites have recently been employed in marine applications as an alternative to massive alloys. However in order to improve their reliability, their corrosion resistance properties need to be ascertained, through a detailed analysis of the type of material and likely interactions in various aggressive environments. This work examined the corrosion behaviour of a composite material with Al 6061 T6 matrix, reinforced with alumina particles (10 % v/v) in three different aggressive environments (sea, brackish and lake water) for its possible use in the marine industry. Also, with a view to investigating the likely impact of the amount of reinforcing particles on corrosion, tests were carried out exclusively in sea water on a composite material similar to the previous one, but containing a higher reinforcing percentage (20 % v/v). No localized corrosion takes place when there are no chlorides in the corrosion solution.
