Teksid is a company of worldwide renown with plants in Europe and America; actions are now being taken to launch business in Asia. The Gem Speciali plant is part of the Aluminium Foundry Division. Teksid operates mainly in the automotive sector; however, the importance, for Fiat, of having its own foundry of a size and with the necessary flexibility to provide castings for particular uses has always been widely acknowledged. A light alloys foundry, being present on the market of aerospace castings since the beginning of the seventies, must look for opportunities on various industrial sectors continuously: in fact, a wide mix of products is an essential aspect to keep good economical performances and, finally, competitiveness. Commercial targets must be addressed to highly sophisticated products anytime: only in such a way it is possible to make a full use of all available resources. Critical castings in aluminium for high speed trains are an example of tins commercial policy. However, this is an aggressively competitive industrial field: costs must be cut off, quality and reliability must be top level; the process design must comply. Shape and dimensions of parts are not typical: special cares and the experience of trained foundry technicians are essential in order to make available to manufacturing work means and instructions, mainly for moulding and heat treatment processes Three months after purchase order issue, the foundry has been able to deliver the first sets of parts. Production is now ongoing. Up to the present days, more than one thousand structures in A357 aluminium alloy were delivered and assembled on trains. The customer satisfaction for this product is high. The train manufactured with aerospace quality processes and materials is a fact.
