This paper discusses two ways of improving the quality and structural integrity of the composite component, by selecting optimum materials and design and by minimizing critical manufacturing (birth) defects through optimum material quality control and processing. Various factors leading to poor composite quality are addressed and recommendations are made to minimize the problems. Composite quality assessment using nondestructive techniques is discussed.
