Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. has developed a new railway obstacle detection system by applying the image processing technology because safety is the most important problem for the speeding up of trains. This system consists of an infrared camera, an image processing unit and a laser rangefinder unit mounted on the train. Good detection was realized in running tests on the Joban Line of East Japan Railway Co., and it is planned to improve the speeding up of the system and its detection accuracy: (1) The detection cycle is to be shortened from about 2 s at the present to 0.5 s so as to cope with higher speed. (2) The precision of the mirror scanner is to be heightened. (3) Measures for bad weather are to be reinforced.
