Thin-walled, flexible expansion joints made with type 304L stainless steel failed by pitting corrosion. Corrosion and cyclic stress tests to find a resistant material were performed, and alloy C-22 was identified. Replacement parts of this alloy have been in service since 1988 with no signs of corrosion.
