Automotive fuel delivery and filtration systems are rapidly evolving. Fuel filters must meet increased demands for performance under a variety of operating conditions. As automakers move toward building vehicles that readily adapt from one part of the global economy to another, they are seeking fuel system innovations that will result in greater fuel economy and efficiency across broader contaminant levels and filtration systems that are more adaptable to changes in fuel composition. In addition, an automotive fuel filter must be durable and maintenance-free. Therefore, a new fuel filtration paradigm is emerging. Fuel-filter manufacturers have found that new filter media are a solution for increasing capacity and enhancing filter life expectancy. Current fuel-injection systems have a rotary electric fuel pump mounted in the fuel tank. Since the pump permanently keeps fuel under pressure, there is less backwashing resulting in a reduction of filter's lifetime. Now, in-tank fuel filters of a polyester polymeric depth media (PPDM) represent a dramatic new idea in automotive fuel filtration. They show a higher capacity and allow finer contaminants to be collected. In 1992, Chrysler became the first manufacturer to offer a PPDM in-tank filter as part of a service package. In 1995, Ford began to use nylon polymeric depth media (NPDM) offering improved fuel resistance. In the paper, modes of filtration and filter ratings as well as the methods for the testing of in-tank fuel filters are discussed.
