The customers expectations regarding high level vehicle interior comfort and air quality are increasing rapidly. With the improvements of the environmental conditions in the vehicle, the safety standards are increasing as well. This will be in the near future a tool to benchmark vehicles regarding their offered standards and features. Today the customer extends his sensitiveness into the want to be protected in the vehicle interior from all sources of particles, fumes and odors. Automotive odors stem typically from four sources: environmental, microbiological, chemical, and human. To improve interior air quality, a combination of several actions can be executed, among them air quality sensors, odor absorbing materials (seat), odor filters, particulate filters, fresh air bleed in the air conditioning system, biocides in gasketing materials, and service odor treatment. To allow the usage of filters within the climate control system, tough requirements for both filter and vehicle package have to be fulfilled. From this point of view, cabin-air-filtration product technology is defined. The possible design actions are outlined. Design parameters are specified in order to guarantee save vehicle operation under all environmental and driving conditions.
