This paper addresses the issue of quantifying the impulsive strut noise experienced by automobile customers in some vehicles. The work performed here uses the method of paired comparisons to quantify customer responses to strut noises binaurally recorded in 14 different vehicles. These evaluations showed that customers were able to repeatably and consistently discern between struts that may generate warranty claims and those that would not. From their subjective responses, perceptually based objective measures were developed that were able to characterize their opinions. These objective measures were indicative of the loudness and loudness fluctuation as characterized by the average loudness (Navg) and standard deviation of the loudness time history (sigmaN(t)), respectively. The loudness time history was produced using a time-varying loudness model which incorporates both temporal masking and temporal integration aspects. These metrics were shown to be robust across vehicle body style and recording location. Additionally, a semantic differential jury evaluation was conducted to aid in the target-setting process. Regions in which Navg and or sigmaN(t) resulted in acceptable levels of strut noise were identified. Finally, some practical considerations in both the test and analysis procedures were identified.
