In order to improve tyres subjective evaluations of tyre/road noise are carried out. In search of a correlation between subjective assessments and objective signal parameters subjective judgments as well as tyre/road noise recordings are analyzed. Subjective evaluations of tyre noise play an important role during development of noise reduce tyres. A combination of categorical judgments and the characterization of conspicuous noises is applied for tyre assessments at various velocity ranges. More than 800 subjective tyre set assessments over a three years period undergo various analyses. Statistical test procedures are applied to reveal their structure. In order to find an objective description of noise phenomena noise recordings are psychoacoustically preprocessed. Similar to the MP3 procedure irrelevant information is removed in a first step. Auditory important contours are processed. An attempt is made to relate noise phenomena to special characteristics in the obtained obvious contours.
