The basic tracking modes of the Doppler sonar velocity log (DSVL) and acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) are introduced. A technique for combining these tracking modes are outlined and the results achieved with the technique is presented. All Doppler systems are based on the fundamental principle that an acoustic signal, which has been either transmitted or received by a moving object, will be shifted in frequency by an amount proportional to the velocity of the moving object.
