This paper presents a synthesis method for the design of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) algorithms. The control design is obtained on the premise that individual vehicle's maneuver should produce minimum negative impact on surrounding vehicles. This traffic-friendliness characteristic is achieved by considering the performance of the whole vehicle string. The performance of the proposed ACC algorithm is examined on a microscopic simulation program, the architecture and basic functions of which will also be described in this paper. Both time-domain signals and statistical data are presented.
