Composite integral armors are of primary interest to defense structures requiring ballistic protection. In this study a composite integral armor is manufactured with the aim of providing a multi-functional capability, easy reparability, quick deployment, enhanced ballistic damage protection and light weight advantages. The typical design of the integral armor is seen to utilize a combination of thick section S2-glass vinyl ester structural composite, alumina ceramic tiles, resilient rubber, fire retardant phenolic layer and signature/functional layers. Current processing techniques prove to be costly and time consuming. The current work focuses on utilization of a cost effective liquid molding vacuum assisted resin infusion molding (VARIM) technique and resin transfer molding (RTM) for production of an integral armor composite up to 50.8 mm thick. The integrity of the interfaces has been evaluated by microstructural inspection. The armor composite is manufactured through several innovative choice of process and material parameters that prove to be cost effective, yet offer superior advantages for ballistic protection.
