Composite integral armor (CIA) is a multi-functional hybrid lightweight structure that consists of different material layers to provide unique ballistic and structural properties. During operation of armored vehicles, they are subject to various levels of impact damage (low velocity to ballistic). Field repair of CIA is critical to renew ballistic properties and structural integrity. Depending on the intensity of impact, various levels of repair may be necessary due to the multi-layer, thick-section design of CIA. The repair process of a typical CIA is significantly different from conventional composite repair techniques, such as in the aerospace industry. Field repair criteria for CIA have been identified and the key criteria are: the ability to repair multiple layers in a minimum number of steps, and uniform heating in all the repair interfaces. An induction-based repair process has been developed that can meet these criteria. The process involves resin infusion or plug repair of the backing plate of t he CIA, followed by replacement of rubber, ceramic and cover layers and induction cure under vacuum. This paper focuses on different levels of CIA repair, repair strategies and different repair methods utilizing induction heating.
