An integral armor for Composite Armored Vehicle (CAV) is currently being developed using a low-cost Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Molding (VARIM). The integral armor is a multi-component composite panel made of ceramic, rubber, and fiber reinforced composites. In this study, four different materials, namely, S-2 glass/vinyl ester composite, EPDM rubber, AD-90 ceramic, and phenolic composite of the integral armor have been tested under a wide range of strain rates (300-11000 s-1) in a compression Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) equipped with a momentum trapping device. The strain rate effects on the initial modulus, failure stress and failure strain through-the-thickness of the integral armor have been investigated. In the present investigation, the initial moduli of S-2 glass/vinyl ester and phenolic composites were found to be almost constant with the increase in strain rate. The failure stresses of S-2 glass/vinyl ester and phenolic composite have been observed to increase with the strain rate. However, for rubber, the failure stress decreases sharply with the strain rate. While the S-2 glass/vinyl ester shows an increase in failure strain, a decrease in case of phenolic composite and rubber is observed with the increase in strain rate.
