The application of powder coating materials now includes automotive components. This has made the prospects of using the powder coating process in automotive OEM coating more attractive. We have established that about 4000 tons of powder coating materials were used in automotive OEM coating in 1996. Of these 4000 tons 90 % were used for primers and anti-chip primers, 8 % for special applications, such as coating B-posts or priming truck cabs and less than 2 % for clearcoats. The development of anti-chip powder coatings was based on polyesterepoxide. The system in which the polyester was crosslinked with epoxy resin, was improved so as to attain adequate UV resistance. The system was also formulated to be compatible with the electrocoat paint. Powder primers or even full-body antichip powders were developed on the foundation of this successful process. There were several reasons why powder coatings were tried as replacements for conventional clearcoats. On the one hand the film thickness widens the range of possible application parameters, which, on the other hand, is required to clearly reduce the surface differences between vertical and horizontal surfaces. BASF recommends the use of powder coatings in the form of slurries, particularly its Ecoclear powder slurry. It is being used for the first time in the completely new coating process that has been set up at Rastatt for the Mercedes A Class.
