Powder coating, an established compliance coating method for many major industries, offers a number of advantages to the user. In 1981, a domestic manufacturer of a small truck began to use a powder coating as a primer surfacer. This was the first use of powder coating as an automotive body coating in the U.S.A., and one which continues through today. This paper discusses the advantages of powder coating as it relates to the major automotive industry and describes their use a primer-surfacer, a coating for wheels and other automotive parts. The use of powder coating as an exterior body coating also is addressed.
